There’s Still time to Train a Rescue

The upcoming Train A Rescue event already has some great match-ups.

Mississippi Horses holds an annual Train a Rescue event. Rescue horses are matched-up with a volunteer trainer. For 90 days, both horse and trainer go through a series of challenges to help train that horse for its forever home. This year there is an added level of Trainer Challenge for those horses that might be just a little too much horse for an amateur or volunteer. With this extra level there will be cash award for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for that extra incentive to participate. The Plan 4 Progress Program from the Texas-based Carter Ranch is just one of the ways to participate. Local clinics hosted by the rescue will also be a great resource. The trainers associated with MHR use the Clinton Anderson Method of pressure and release and will teach newcomers and volunteers.

Most regular MHR trainers have worked with these horses in some form or fashion. They have evaluated them and know their personalities. They can also tell you the benefits of the Train a Rescue program. It has given numerous horse-lovers a chance to get to know their own personal strengths and a way to understand equine behavior. See what MHR trainer Cori Arender has to say.

“It challenges you to put the time in that it takes to understand how to communicate with your horse on its level. Once you learn this, it changes everything. Each horse and each participant are at a different place.”

Use this time to let the love you have for horse show through. Step out of your comfort zone and see how your life can become enriched. You and your rescue could possibly become a partnership that will last. That does not always happen, but both you and the horse will be better off for having tried.

There are still a few horses available for this fun experience.

Lady Gaga is a rather new intake for MHR. She is a 7-year old palomino/paint. Her unusual coloring makes her outstanding and attractive. She is around 14h but is a strong, stout mare. She is double branded and came from a breeder in Utah. While she is probably a registered palomino or paint or both, MHR does not have papers for her.

Ernest-He is a registered western pleasure bred, Quarter Horse gelding. Ernest was donated to us due to behavior problems. He is sweet as pie but will kick if aggravated. He didn’t know much in the round pen so needs to be started over. Any western pleasure trainers out there interested in the Train a Rescue Challenge with this boy. A strong experience trainer can bring a new life to the handsome gelding. Don’t let this one pass you by.

Jagger-You might not have the moves like Jagger, but this gelding does. He is one of the Clinton-10. He was in the best shape weight-wise. Other than that, this poor fellow was subjected to the same neglect act the other 9. A stud at intake, he no longer has the full aggression as he did in trying to catch and haul him. However, he will still need an experienced trainer to conquer his fears. A great Quarter Horse build, Jagger can become a great companion soon with the correct training. Check this guy out.

Eli-is a rescue favorite. A 2009 model, he was dumped at auction and since has been living at the sanctuary. He needed to put on weight and learn to live with other horses and just become a horse. This 12 year old quarter has come a long way. It is time to show everyone that he is a great horse for someone who want to ride trail.

Misty-We recently took Misty in for an individual who was rescuing horses from auctions and kill pens. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, financially and physically and she reached out to us for help. We took in 10 that needed the most help/rehab/training. Misty was a little thin, but she’s quickly gained weight. She is not trained. Misty just is halter broken. She has a head full of sense, she just doesn’t know anything. We haven’t had time to work with her and are hoping someone with experience can take her and provide her at minimum with the basics so we can soon get her under saddle. She’s a great one to take through the Plan 4 Progress Challenge!

Hunter the Mule-Did you ever want to train a mule? Pictures just don’t do Hunter justice! He is a stunning Buckskin mule. 14.3 hands, 6 years old, thick built. He is almost halter broke. Hunter will make a great candidate for the Train a Rescue challenge. You don’t have to be a professional trainer to participate. You can win great prizes and have an awesome learning experience. Plus you can adopt your partner.

Meet Ladybug-She went to the sanctuary to make room for others in training so she’s gone a year without being ridden. Because of that, we have entered her into the 90 Day Challenge. You will take her home and go through all the steps (she knows them well) but it will give you several weeks to make sure she’s the right one for you.  She will be a good horse for a volunteer or intermediate because she knows the round pen work and will progress easily through the P4P steps.

She is in need of a forever home, just like all the rest. She is a 16.1 hand Saddlebred mare. Fifteen year’s old and a nice trail horse. She has a canter to die for. Ladybug is not a beginner horse. High energy so not for a timid rider. She is fast but very controllable. She stops with just your seat. Super sweet, likes a light touch. Ground ties, isn’t too keen on being tied to a trailer , she might set back. However she has learned to high tie too. Super fun to ride, would also excel in low level Dressage.

Falcon-Wouldn’t this horse be fun to own. He has his own map of Mississippi right on his back. His beloved owner passed away with no one to take care of him. It’s tough on an animal to be abandoned and left to fend for himself. He found himself at a rescue that itself had fallen on hard times and could not keep their horses. MHR to the rescue (pun intended) and now Falcon is a part of the newly rescued group. He has filled out well. He had a kind eye and wants to trust. He just needs that one someone who will take him and show him love and how to become a welcomed addition to a new family.

Gus– has been a favorite of the Tibbee Road horses. He was saved from a kill pen as a baby and unfortunately the rescue got in over its head. He was so skinny we didn’t realize he was a stud until he began to gain weight. He has a great disposition.

Gus would make a super candidate for a child or youth to train for the Train a Rescue challenge. He is a 3 year old, 13.1 hand POA. Absolute adorable and in your pocket. You can’t find a sweeter pony! He is halter broken. Gus knows how to pick up his feet and allows you to saddle him. He doesn’t know anything under saddle yet, but will be easy to train. He’s a great candidate for a youth division Train a Rescue–just saying . . .

Scout-The rescue has its share of gorgeous black and white paints. This fellow is no exception. With his piercing blue eye, he will catch anyone’s attention.

Scout is a cute two year old that came from a recent cruelty case. He has since gained weight and grown several inches in height! He’s been gelded and halter trained but he’s still leery of people. He’s curious though and wants to trust. He’s a quick learner and will be a great partner for the Trainer Challenge! He will kick out at feeding time so not recommended for children. He doesn’t appear to be gaited
