LOKI

Mississippi Horse Rescue’s main star of “As the Barn Turns.”

In Norse mythology, Loki is the god of mischief. As myths go, Loki was handsome and tricked and schemed and wrecked havoc wherever he went. He was a cunning trickster. If you asked anyone at Twelve Oaks, that fits Loki the mini mule to a tee. While endearing and cute, Loki can definitely create his own mischief and share of trouble.

Loki was purchased at auction for $25. No one else was bidding on the scraggly lame mini mule. The auctioneer said the owner claimed he had been hit by a car. Whatever the injury, it doesn’t slow him down at all. He can gimp along and keep up with the best of them.

Loki is the barn influencer, the Don Juan of Twelve Oaks and creator of chaos. Loki has an aura about him that demands respect from the other horses, including the geldings. His best friends are the geldings and they follow him around as if he’s a rock star. He loves the mares and Lord help us all when he falls in love with one in particular. She can’t get out of his eyesight without him throwing a complete tantrum. He goes through new girlfriends every few weeks. Quite often a volunteer will take a mare out to groom or exercise only to realize Loki is trying to break through the fence to get to them. When he falls in love he falls hard. So much so that when they leave, he will grieve for days, even weeks. MHR friends and supporters think we’re terrible to break his little heart like that but, we can’t keep a horse from getting their forever home, only for Loki to dump them the next week. He does get over it and finds another. Loki’s philosophy in life is as the song goes, if you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with!

Loki is a permanent resident at Twelve Oaks. He is too special and brings too much fun to volunteers and visitors alike. Plus, we don’t think anyone else would put up with his silly antics. Loki’s story and soap opera continues. Follow his story on Facebook #mhrLoki.
