MHR Train a Rescue Camp Scheduled
This summer you can learn how we train our most difficult horses. If you are interested in becomig an exercise rider for MS Horses, are interested in adopting a horse, or just want to increase your horsemanship skills, this camp is for you! You will learn how to communicate and understand horse behavior – the key to having a true partnership with your horse. You will learn the steps each horse goes through to become a safe and willing partner. You will see first hand the challenges of training rescue horses that have different personalities and come to us with emotional issues.
Rescue horses can be the most challenging but these are the ones that teach you the most. All camp horses are
already trained in the method and students will take each horse through the training process while aware of their past problems, as they often recur with a new handler. Types of things they will learn during camp are how to keep a horse from walking off while mounting, being barn sour, practicing the emergency brake, desensitizing the spooky horse, teaching the dull horse to move forward and the spirited horse to slow down. The first two days will consist of a lot of on the ground training to ensure each horse and rider have the connection needed to hit the trails on Wednesday.
Participants will spend three full days learning the training steps used by MHR Trainers. This includes lunging for respect, lessons on round penning and how that prepares horses for the saddle and rider. The primary instructor is Tricia Miller, who may be joined by some guest instructors as well as members of MHR’s volunteer training group.
Each student will have a mentor to work with them on a one on one basis. We are also demonstrating equine body work sessions to help participants spot soreness in their horse which can lead to behavior problems. Since the camp is planned to be overnight, campers will have the opportunity to assist with morning and afternoon feedings while learning more about proper care and barn management.
Participants can bring their own horse IF it’s a horse adopted and trained through MHR.
